Self-Guided Modules for Pedagogy

The year 2020 pushed the world to rethink how we leverage technology for the purpose of online learning . Even before the pandemic , Teach For Armenia had already identified the need to adapt our approach for Teacher-Leaders working in remote communities .
In short , we determined it was necessary to design a suite of training modules that could be pre-loaded onto a computer and completed offline . For many of our Teacher- Leaders working in rural communities , having access to consistent internet connectivity can pose a challenge . Given this , our team set out to design a package of 16 asynchronous self-guided modules that would prioritize :
• A foundation in teaching
• Techniques and tools to make their classes more rigorous , inclusive , effective , and project-based
• Continued support after Teacher Leadership Academy
Each module includes a powerpoint deck , a short instructional video ( i . e . 20 minutes in length ), examples , tasks , as well as the rubric used to evaluate each task . In December , 81 % of Teacher-Leaders met all basic expectations or exceeded expectations on culminating tasks in the self-guided modules . As we have tested this approach , we have learned the need to combine self-guided learning with robust discussion and live coaching to ensure all Teacher-Leaders are successful . By leveraging a practice-based approach , our Teacher-Leaders immediately apply new concepts to their work in the classroom through the tasks associated with each module . A member of Teach For Armenia ’ s staff then reviews the task and provides feedback . Additionally , Teacher- Leaders engaged in online discussions with their peers to deepen their understanding of the content being delivered through asynchronous learning .
Lastly , our Teacher-Leaders continue to receive one-on-one support through telephone calls as well as site visits facilitated by a Leadership Development Manager . In short , this method has strengthened our approach to instructional coaching and teacher training . This is particularly important as we continue to expand in rural communities .
Our Kochari Culture Survey demonstrated that 96 % of Teacher- Leaders think that they are developing the knowledge and skills to become innovative Teacher- Leaders .
