Story of Impact Partnering with UNHCR in the Ararat Region

Through Teach For Armenia ’ s partnership with UNHCR , we entered a new region of Armenia , placing our first ever Teacher-Leaders in the Ararat region . Specifically , two Teach For Armenia Teacher-Leaders , Armine Khudoyan from the second generation of Teacher-Leaders and Anush Melkonyan from the fourth generation , will complete a third year of our Leadership Development Program in Darbnik village . The community is home to 183 students of different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds , including a multitude of families displaced during the war in Artsakh . Together , UNHCR Armenia and Teach For Armenia seek to promote equity in education , as well as foster cultural diversity and social inclusion .
Through this collaboration , UNHCR Armenia has funded a Community Impact Project in Darbnik . The project is called “ Kamoorj ,” or bridge in Armenian , and aims to create a unifying and motivating environment for learning and creativity . The funds will be used to transform a corner of the school into a space for the formal and informal transfer of knowledge , ideas , and culture . This project is particularly important for displaced children adapting to their host community , as they are in need of peer support , friendship , and social inclusion . The project ’ s estimated completion date is February 2021 .
Due to COVID-19 , Darbnik Secondary School was closed for in-person learning from March to May , and then again for an extended recess throughout October . UNHCR Armenia , in cooperation with the Fund for Armenian Relief ( FAR ), donated 20 tablets to the school to help displaced and local children continue learning remotely . The devices are also meant to enhance their technology skills and personal development through Change-Based Learning .
