“ There ’ s a community within a community when it comes to our veterans ,” she added . “ It ’ s such a rewarding feeling to see genuine connections result from a meetup or a Veterans Day celebration . They start exchanging military stories , and before you know it , they meet up to work in the onsite woodworking shop or enjoy a meal together in our restaurant . Our veterans share a true brother and sisterhood .”

Boys & Girls Aid volunteers assemble gift bags
Oh boy , oh boy , oh boy ! Times 10 equals 30 . Thirty what ? Thirty sport bags . That ’ s what we do for Christmas for 30 boys

For many years Dianne McMichael has been assembling these at her house with the help of all of the Cypress Branch members of Boys & Girls Aid .
What goes into those bags ? Sweatshirts , basketballs , water bottles , gift cards for a fast food restaurant in bill folds , beanie babies ( yes , the boys like them ), hacky sacks , small toys , socks and a box with 24-plus cookies . The members of the Charbonneau branch have each donated two dozen or more of their favorite homemade cookies . We assembled the cookies into boxes . Each box contained many kinds of cookies . All of this goes into the sport bags . When this is done , the bags are so full it is hard to get them zipped up .
Once this is completed , the bags are placed on a sheet in Dianne ’ s garage . From there they are taken to Boys & Girls Headquarters and given to the

boys at a party . These boys are thrilled with everything received . The bags were first thought of because before the boys came to Boys & Girls Aid , they had been thrown out of foster homes , only to take with them their few possessions in a garbage bag . Life has changed for these fortunate boys . What a great party this is every year . We have been told that when the boys open these bags there is some swapping of cookies . This kind of gift giving is not inexpensive . Dianne takes care of assembling everything and also makes some of the cookies . This is financially made possible , and with the assistance of , The Rotary Club of Wilsonville and also by Remax . Dianne ’ s work is an inestimable part of the project . Thank you to all who help with this gift for the boys served by Boys & Girls Aid .
