Malawi News
The final week of August saw two teachers from our partner school in Malawi bring some
much needed sunshine with them as they arrived in school following a 24 hour journey
from the “Warm Heart of Africa”. Mr Peter Mauya, Depute and Teacher of Maths and
Science and Mr Mathews Mbobo, Teacher of English and Drama visited from Linthipe
Secondary School as part of the British Council Connecting Classrooms programme. The
Teachers visited classes and engaged with pupils to answer questions about aspects of life
and education in Malawi. They observed classroom practice and discussed developments
in the new curriculum in Malawi. We were able to discuss teaching practices that were
common to both countries and learn from each other about how to engage learners in the
process of education.
Remember the “Spend a Penny” fundraiser earlier in the year where the Primary School
raised money for additional latrines? Peter and Mathews were able to visit the pupils in
Primary classes who had put together the video and reported on how the work was
progressing. Our friends also travelled to Edinburgh and St Andrews to take in cultural
icons of Scotland. The visit c ulminated in a Ceilidh fundraiser for the pupil expedition to
Linthipe in 2016. Our Malawian link has benefited enormously from these visits and we
hope to raise the profile of Global Citizenship, particularly in light of the current
International situation. Thanks to our staff and pupils for making them feel so welcome.
