Music Showcase, Gleneagles Hotel, Monday 26 November
Once again, enjoying the experience that only Gleneagles can offer, the capacity audience
was treated to a fabulous evening of music by our young people.
Opening the show, the string orchestra performed a dramatic medley from ‘Pirates of the
Caribbean’ following on with the seasonal, ‘Rock Ye Very’, based on the well-known
Christmas Carol.
The first soloist of the evening was Harriet Morley, S5, playing the very exciting and
challenging ‘Two Imps ‘ on xylophone. The choir followed with two songs from films
released this year - the Abba hit, ‘Andante, Andante’ from ‘Mamma Mia – Here We Go
Again!’ and ‘This is Me’ from ‘The Greatest Showman’. The songs are firm favourites with
the choir and were very popular with the appreciative audience.
The Pipe Band made their first appearance of the night. Playing two marches, the 24
performers looked fabulous in full uniform. A vote of thanks was extended to Jenny
Haldane of the West Perthshire Recreational Facility Committee for the financial support
towards the purchase of several new uniforms.
Poppy Roy, S3, and Taylor MacArthur Scott, S3, performed the beautiful Simon and
Garfunkel ‘Scarborough Fair’ as a cello duet.
For the Primary 6 and 7 brass players, this was, for some of them, their first public
performance. Ably assisted by some Secondary pupils, they played four short pieces,
ending with ‘Little Donkey’ and ‘White Christmas’.
S4 pupil, Charlie Rogers impressively captured the mood of ‘Little Hungarian Rhapsody’
on violin, a complex, technically difficult piece. The Wind Ensemble featured a ‘Strictly
Come Dancing’ moment with their first piece ‘Tango’, followed by a beautiful
arrangement of ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ from ‘Les Miserables’.
S6 pupil Amy Davidge wowed the audience with her impressive vocal performance of the
Puccini aria ‘O Mio Babbino Caro’. The Senior Pipe Band returned to play a new
composition, written by Pipe Major Stuart Brown, to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the
school pipe band being formed. A competition was held to name the new piece and a
large number of entrants suggested a ‘Lang Toun’ theme. The name drawn was by Jessie
Tuffee, S4, for her title ‘The Lang Toon Tune’. The second piece played was part of a set
which the band will play at the Scottish Schools’ Pipe Band contest in March.
A highlight of the night was ‘The Drummers’ Fanfare’, an impressive piece performed by
the Pipe Band Drum Corps. They performed this in darkness with illuminated sticks much
to the delight of the audience. The choir returned in festive mood to perform the popular
Mariah Carey song ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’. The final solo piece of the night was
by Maya Christie, S5, who gave a stunning and energetic performance of ‘Dance’ a
dramatic and impressive piece for violin.
The evening was closed by two performances by the Senior Brass Band playing the medley
‘Abba Gold’ which included many of the well-known hits by the group, and to get everyone
into the festive spirit, ‘ Christmas Carousel’, which featured 14 Christmas songs.
The entire evening demonstrated the excellent attainment and achievement and the high
level of commitment by our young people and staff, and the rapturous and enthusiastic
applause certainly suggested the audience would agree with that.
