neutrality
ì1940 May - Hitler invades the Netherlands and days later, Netherlands
surrenders to Germany. All Dutch men between 18 to 45 years old are
required to work for Germany or go into hiding
ì1941 Dutch Jews declared stateless. Dec 7 - Pearl Harbor attack;
US joins war
ì1942 May - Jews in Amsterdam are required to wear the yellow star.
July 6 - Frank family goes into hiding
ì1940-1945 Dutch Resistance - many Dutch citizens like Miep, Jan, and
Mr. Kugler forge ration cards, hide their neighbors, create underground
communication networks, subvert German authorities
ì1944 Sept 14 - first Dutch cities are liberated by Allies. Aug 9 - annex
residents arrested by Gestapo; sent to Westerbork transit camp
ìq1945 May 5 - Netherlands liberated; May 8 - Hitler commits suicide;
Germany surrenders; Aug 6 - US uses atomic bomb against Hiroshima;
Aug 9 - US uses atomic bomb against Nagasaki; Aug 16 - Japan surrenders;
Sept 2 - WWII ends with signing of peace treaty with Japan

MOUSCHI THE CAT Peter’s cat Mouschi refused to leave the Annex after his owner was
taken away. Eventually one of the office cleaners gave Mouschi a new home.

died between Apr
9 and May 8 while
being deported to
Theresienstadt after
being thrown in front
of a train by soldiers. Peter van Pels was
sent to Mauthausen
concentration camp
in Jan, 1945 and
died of exhaustion
on May 10, 1945. In Jan, 1945 Edith
Frank died of
exhaustion while
Otto Frank lived
on (until 1980)
and spread Anne’s
legacy through the
publishing of her
diary. In Jan, 1945 Anne
and Margot were
sent to Bergen-
Belsen and both died
only one month later
of typhus.
