COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
TCR IS YOUR COMMUNITY
THEATRE. HERE’S WHAT
WE’VE BEEN UP TO
AROUND TOWN.
Throughout the summer, TCR
hosted the African American
Museum of Iowa’s Traveling
Reading Nook exhibit. This
interactive educational display
included artifacts, reading
materials, activities and more. This
initiative is designed to enhance
classrooms or libraries with a
professionally curated, themed
collection of learning materials. To
learn more or become a host, visit

production of Lysistrata. Two of our
own staff members performed in
the cast. The Classics at Brucemore
is a summer series that celebrates
the rich history of Greek tragedy,
Shakespearean comedy, and
twentieth century American drama.
TCR staff members attended
Think To Ink on September 21 in
Hiawatha. Think to Ink’s annual
event brings creative professionals
together at Cedar Graphics
to participate in a variety of
workshops and network with
industry leaders.
TCR participated in this
summer’s annual Keys on Third
interactive piano installation, a
program that places used pianos
outdoors for free public use. Local
artist Melissa Collins created “Live
and Play Sweetly” — designed for
passerbys to “pause, play, and
simply ‘be’ for a moment amongst
the beauty of our city and culture”.
TCR collaborated with
Brucemore to construct the set for
the 2017 Classics at Brucemore
14
careers in the theatre through
Network Learning Connections.
On October 5th, TCR took part
in the Next Generation Summit by
providing sessions of improv to
conference participants. Several
members of the TCR staff also
attended as guests. Each year, the
Cedar Rapids Metro Economic
Alliance produces this professional,
full-day conference designed to
inspire, empower and develop
young professionals who live and
work in Iowa’s Creative Corridor.
TCR hosted the ROBfm live
broadcast crew over the lunch
hour on October 12th as they
raised “Pennies for Puerto Rico”.
Our downtown community came
by to donate their loose change to
support victims of Hurricane Maria,
which devastated the U.S. territory
on Sept. 20.
This fall, TCR is hosting two
Washington High School students
who are job shadowing in each
department. The students visit once
per week, and assist the theatre
with a variety of tasks.
TCR educators have been
spending time this fall in local
elementary schools teaching after
school theatre classes through
Kids on Course. Kids on Course is
a nonprofit program of the Zach
Johnson Foundation, in cooperation
with the Cedar Rapids Community
School District.
Staff members have been visiting
local middle schools talking about
TCR participated in America
Reads on October 19th. Staff
members regularly take part in this
initiative by reading to elementary
students in the Cedar Rapids and
Marion area.
TCR families enjoyed apple
picking, hay rack riding, and many
other fun fall activites at "Festi-Fall"
