STONE TOWN
Zanzibar’s capital is historic Stone Town, the hub of Zanzibar’s
tourism. It is also a World Heritage Site, home to numerous
historical and cultural sites, including the Makusurani graveyard
where many of the islands previous Arab rulers are buried. The
House of Wonders is an iconic four story building which is one
of six buildings constructed by the second Sultan of Zanzibar,
Barghash bin Said, and is the first place on the island with electrical
lights. The Hamamni and Kidichi Persian Baths were the first public
baths on the island, and are a major attraction in Stone Town. The
Dunga Ruins, located just outside of Stone Town, are what is left of
the palace built in the 18th and was the last seat of the traditional
rulers of Zanzibar. To see a collection of Zanzibar history, be sure to
check out the Peace Memorial Museum, which serves a national
historical museum detailing the island’s long history.
Freddie Mercury who is consistently voted one of the greatest
singers in the history of popular music, was born in Stone town
in Zanzibar.
Zanzibar is host Coconut crabs, the largest land-
living arthropod in the world. The coconut crab has a well-
developed sense of smell, which it uses to locate its food.
