The drainage basin of the Nile encompasses about 10 percent of the area of Africa. Zambezi (shared with 8 other countries) The Zambezi River is the fourth-longest river in Africa, the longest east-flowing river in Africa, and the largest flowing river into the Indian Ocean from Africa. White Nile (shared with 5 other countries) One of the two main tributaries of the Nile; the other is the Blue Nile. The name comes from colouring due to clay carried in the water. The 19th century search by Europeans for the source of the Nile was mainly focused on the White Nile, which disappeared into the depths of what was then known as “Darkest Africa”.
