But, it's not just forces within the country that influence the decision, there is also outside pressure coming from the US and Europe. The United States are in favor of GMOs, saying Tanzania could get itself out of its economic hole by growing genetically modified crops and increasing agricultural productivity, whereas Europe is opposed to GMOs, arguing that they would have a negative impact for the country in the long run.
Another possible solution is using hydroelectric power. By 2030, Tanzania will need to rely on hydroelectric power for more than half of its energy demands.
