Marcial, Amber D.C Vitto Legal Consultant. email add: [email protected] & [email protected] Dengvaxia and its dimwits Last weekend on the occasion of our commemoration of four days in 1986 when we decided to collectively pray for, support and deliberately put ourselves in harm’s way to protect soldiers whose rebellion had gone terribly wrong, the EDSA stage built to celebrate the people’s bravery was shamelessly appropriated by a politico unconnected and totally absent at the 1986 EDSA People Power revolution. Benigno Aquino III seized the occasion to pander to political partisanship and peddle the Liberal Party’s senatorial candidates, thus treating the event like a private show, unmindful and ignorant, that whatever values were espoused in 1986 had been totally trashed during his term as one of our country’s worst presidents. It isn’t just ignorance. Aquino had forgotten that under his incumbency he brazenly threatened the Supreme Court (SC) and weakened its foundations simply because the High Court had ruled unfavorably in a case involving his family’s wealth. Aquino had likewise mocked the checks and balances system woven into our democracy when he fed, fattened and even bribed our legislative institutions using both the traditional pork barrel system and an abomination spawned at the Office of the President known as the Disbursement Acceleration Program — each declared illegal by the same SC he tyrannized. On the EDSA stage, turning delusional, defensive and self-absorbed, he attempted to explain his criminal complicity with what is perhaps the deadliest and most prolonged medical crisis a sociopath can inflict on our most vulnerable if only to pander to the political exigencies of a campaign to inflict on the public a proven incompetent for the 2016 presidential elections. Last week, we were again reminded of the depth of his intellectual faculties. Alluding to a lawyer whose zeal and dedication have not only given helpless victims — both desperate parents and their children awaiting the inevitable — hope and a prayer that the painful deaths from a recklessly rolled-out vaccination program were not in vain, he sarcastically mocked and then ironically accused the lawyer of, of all things, ignorance. Not thinking clearly or deliberately discounting his own lack of expertise, Aquino had again forgotten that when he first met with Sanofi, the peddlers of Dengvaxia, whose use officials have outlawed in this country, he was unaccompanied by the Health secretary at the time. Unaware of their speckled past and a history of deadly scandals, Aquino effectively admitted to ignorance in ascertaining critical data that would have raised red flags on the company with which he was so taken. Either he was again feigning ignorance or was criminally negligent. Or both. Discounting volumes of data and medical research to the contrary — most predating the stance of conflicted physicians who’ve benefited from Sanofi’s generosity — Aquino claims medical professionals on his side have questioned the over a hundred Dengvaxia-related autopsies and the ever- increasing number of fatalities. Unlike politics, truth is not a game of numbers. death by Dengvaxia is not a PlayStation app. One expert physician tracking Dengvaxia’s deadly path authored an article entitled, “Dengvaxia is a Stupid Vaccine.” The good doctor says: “Dengvaxia is a stupid vaccine. First, you (have) to be 100 percent infected with dengue to be vaccinated and hopefully protected against dengue. “Second, you have to wait for at least one year to be fully vaccinated for (a) third dose and hope that you do not get infected again with dengue within the same year. “Third, (Dengvaxia) cannot be vaccinated to younger children who are most vulnerable to early deaths and prolonged hospitalization due to dengue. “Fourth, only 70 percent of the fully vaccinated children with Dengvaxia will be protected from 75 percent of the four (dengue) strains. “Fifth, fully vaccinated children with Dengvaxia will only be protected for three to five years. “Sixth, herd immunity will be never be attained with Dengvaxia.” Obviously, it is not just Dengvaxia that is stupid. None of the foregoing are disputed even by Aquino’s Sanofi-conflicted doctors. Repeatedly employing lymphatic and lazy ignorance as his default defense, Aquino remains callous and insensitive. He continues to ignore data that he should have been aware of when he employed presidential powers to bypass statutory safety protocols that would have avoided the countless Dengvaxia-related fatalities his unthinking recklessness had caused. Pero hindi sa buong buhay at buhay- pulitika niya, kundi sa ilang tampok – o pinakatampok pa nga – na bahagi nito. Syempre, kritikal ako sa rekord niya ng pamumuno. Ang kakatwa sa mga parangal sa kanya ngayon, parang hindi ang pagkapangulo niya ang tumatampok, kundi ang ibang bagay tungkol sa kanya. Hinahangaan ko si Cory, ang maybahay na walang interes lumahok sa pulitika, pero todong sumuong dito noong naramdaman niya ang pangangailangan at aktwal na hiniling ng mga mamamayan na palitan niya ang kinamumuhiang pangulo. Hinahangaan ko ang tapang at tatag niyang labanan ang diktador na si Marcos, at ang pagtitiwala niya sa mga mamamayan na hindi lang sila boboto nang tama, kundi ay magpoprotesta kapag dinaya ni Marcos ang halalan. Hinahangaan ko si Cory, ang dating pangulong lumabas sa pagreretiro at lumabag sa katandaan at sakit para makisangkot sa paglaban sa pinakabuktot na mga hakbangin ng mga rehimeng pumalit sa kanya. Hinahangaan ko ang kahandaan niyang sunugin ang kanyang tulay, kahit pansamantala, sa mga nasa kapangyarihan – na desperadong kunin ang suporta niya. Hinahangaan ko ang giting at gilas niya sa pagsasalita at pagkilos kasama ang mga mamamayan. Ano ang laman ng paghangang ito? Ano ang nagbibigay-buhay rito? Ang mga larawan niya kasama ang mga mamamayan, lalo na sa lansangan, sa paghahangad ng pagbabago – noong paglaban sa diktadura, Edsa 1, Edsa 2, mga protesta kontra sa rehimeng Arroyo. Lagi niyang dala ang malambing na ngiti niya, na parang nagsasabing natural lang na hakbangin ang magrali laban sa masamang pamahalaan. May dating siyang nagsasabing tama ang ipinaglalaban. Hindi ko masyadong gusto ang mga larawan niya sa pwesto, bilang pangulo – bagamat marahan niyang ipinapakita sa mga ito na siya, hindi iba, ang pinuno. Ang mga kwento ng kalmadong tapang niya sa paglaban, tampok ang maanghang na mga pahayag niya kontra kay Marcos, ang kagustuhan niyang sumama agad sa pagkilos sa Edsa 1, ang mga pahayag at pagkilos niya laban kina Estrada noon at Arroyo nitong huli, maging ang pagharap niya sa “standoff” sa Fort Bonifacio noong Pebrero 2006. Noong pinipigilan siyang magpakita sa Edsa 1, dahil baka siya mabaril, sabi niya, “Hindi ba, ang sabi natin, tuluy-tuloy ang laban na ito?” Hindi siya takot sa harapan ng hanay, sa linya ng dangal. Ang mga panayam niyang anekdota-dito- anekdota-doon ang estilo. Laging nakatanim sa mga kwento ang mga batayan niya sa isang tindig o pagkilos, at kung paano niya nasumpungan ito. “Alam mo… Sabi sa akin ni… Sabi ko naman…” Napakapersonal ng dating ng pakikisangkot niya sa pulitika sa ganitong mga kwento. Mararamdaman kung paano siya inudyukan ng mga mamamayan sa iba’t ibang panahon na makiisa sa pagkilos. Damang-dama niya ang hamon, nang laging may pagpapakumbaba sa ano ang maiaambag niya. Ang mga pagbabalik- tanaw niya sa mga sakripisyo at kahirapang sinuong. Bagamat kalakhan nito ay may temang relihiyoso, makikita ang mahigpit niyang paniniwala sa kawastuhan ng ipinaglalaban niya, sa mga taong malapit sa kanya, at sa wisyo at aksyon ng mga mamamayan. Makikita ang pag-asa niyang maaalpasan din ang anumang kahirapan. Tulad ng mga aktibista, ipinapakita niya na posibleng tumanda sa tuluy-tuloy na paglaban nang hindi nagpipighati at nagkukwenta ng sakripisyo, at nang napapayabong nito, hindi naigugupo. Kapansin-pansin ngayon sa mga parangal kay Cory ang pagpapasalamat ng iba’t ibang tao, karaniwan at hindi karaniwan, sa kanya. Sa abang pagtingin ko, nagpapasalamat ang mga tao sa kanya hindi dahil tinitingnan siyang nagbigay nang todo- todo sa paglilingkod sa bayan – hindi lang dahil dito. Mas mahalaga, nagpapasalamat sa kanya ang mga tao dahil, sa tingin ng marami, mahirap man para sa kanya, ibinigay niya ang hiniling sa kanya ng mga mamamayan sa mahahalagang yugto ng kasaysayan: ang lumaban at mamuno sa paglaban sa mga diktadura at ilehitimong pamumuno. 04 Agosto 2009
