Silva NUTRITION is deeply valued by Filipinos. Every year, educational institutions and local government units gear up to celebrate the much-anticipated Nutrition Month. During its observance, various activities are lined up to be joined and enjoyed by the public; from feeding programs, organic gardening initiatives, poster and slogan-making competitions, seminars and fora, among many others. In preschool and elementary years, the importance of nutrition has been inculcated in us, the necessity to eat fruits and vegetables and the essence of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Television shows catering to children always have gigantic fruits and big vegetable as characters, to further teach us their relevance to a long and healthy life. Even the lyrics of the song “Bahay Kubo” are engraved in the hearts of every Filipino. This, along with the inclusion of a variety of fruits and vegetables in infamous and traditional Filipino cuisines, are proof of the prominence of nutrition in the Filipino psyche. This year, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) leads the celebration of the Nutrition Month with the theme, “Ugaliing magtanim, sapat na nutrisyon, aanihin”. The NNC highlights home gardening as a solution to various nutrition problems plaguing the National Capital Region (NCR) and even the whole country. Despite the prominence of nutrition in the Filipino culture, a lot of marginalized sector suffer from malnutrition and its various effects and implication. According to the Regional Nutrition Situation Analysis as stated in the Regional Plan of Action for Nutrition (RPAN) of NCR, nutrition challenges or manifestation is seen in the double of malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and maternal malnutrition. Data reveals that in NCR, there is a 15.1% prevalence of underweight children ages 5 years old and below, 24.9% prevalence of stunting, 6.4% prevalence of wasting and 6% prevalence of being underweight according to height in 2015. Other nutrition problems include Iron Deficiency Anemia and Vitamin A Deficiency and poor nutritional condition of mothers who are about to give birth. Contrary to popular belief, malnutrition is not just a simple problem due to food inadequacy, it is a complex concept with multi-faceted factors and solutions. One of the immediate causes is indeed inadequate food intake as the percentage of food secure households decreased from 51.3% in 2013 to 36.1% in 2015 while the percentage of food insecure households increased from 9.5% in 2013 to 29.2% in 2015. Food security entails ability to eat full three meals or without experience of going to bed hungry or going hungry for a full day or night. Poor health status and presence of diseases such as upper respiratory infection, pneumonia, bronchitis and diarrhea are also among the immediate causes of malnutrition. Tila may ibang agenda na priority ang kamara sa araw ng talumpati ngPangulo. causes however, are the underlying causes including inaccessibility to food and inadequate care or improper food intake. This is very common in NCR where 32% of families consider themselves food poor. Inaccessibility to health services, poor hygiene and sanitation, limited physical activity, poor child feeding practices and poor eating habits are also the leading causes of malnutrition. In 2011, only 2% of the total households in NCR participated in vegetable gardening programs due to inadequate land space and resources. With the theme, “Ugaliing magtanim, sapat na nutrisyon, aanihin”, the NNC along with its partner agencies and organizations hopes to highlight the relevance of home gardening and encourage families, communities and various stakeholders to join the efforts for sustainability. Food gardening will prevent micronutrient deficiencies through diversification, reduce food insecurity and food poverty, increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables and will provide a fallback during natural disasters and calamities. To further promote public awareness, the public is highly encouraged to join the various activities for the Nutrition Month Celebration, like starting their own home gardens and posting of family selfies in the social media in order to put a human face to the joyful activity of food gardening. The initiatives to promote proper nutrition is led by the NNC in cooperation with the Nutrition Foundation of the Philippines, the Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), Inc., the Philippine Information Agency, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Commission on Population, Department of Education and the Grace Family Helper Inc.
