By Joy Gabrido CALAMBA CITY, Laguna, (PIA) – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Undersecretary Benny Antiporda assures public that the government shall ensure that Tawilis will not become extinct and will continue to provide alternative livelihood to affected fisherfolks. “Magdedeclare na lang ng preservation area ang DENR. Talagang binibigyan na po natin ng kaukulang pansin itong tungkol sa Tawilis na hindi po natin papayagan na tuluyang maglaho ang lahing tawilis,” he said in an interview during the DENR 4A Dicot Building inauguration in this city last January 25. (DENR will declare a preservation area. We are paying close attention to the problem with Tawilis, we will not let it get extinct.) The Sardinella Tawilis, which is an endemic sardine in Taal Lake, Batangas, was recently Undersecretary Benny Antiporda declared as an endangered species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). IUCN said it was caused by ”overexploitation, pollution, and competition and/or predation by introduced fishes which lead to a continuous decline in habitat quality and number of mature individuals.” With this, Antiporda added that there will be a closing season for Taal Lake to make sure that the Tawilis species will have time to breed. He, however, guaranteed that alternative livelihood interventions will be employed by DENR through partnering with concerned national government agencies like the Department of Social Welfare and Development and Department of Labor and Employment, among others. “We will try to make it an interagency responsibility to take care of the welfare of our fisherfolks,” he said.
