PRRC chair leads site inspection,
orients TWG on programs, projects

QUEZON CITY -- Department of
Budget and Management (DBM)
Secretary Benjamin Diokno, also
the acting Chairperson of the Pasig
River Rehabilitation Commission
(PRRC), spearheaded a Pasig
River Ferry Inspection recently,
to update the Technical Working
Group of the Pasig River Ferry
Convergence Program about the
Pasig River Ferry System and the
ongoing programs and projects
for the Pasig River.
The inspection, attended
by more than 30 officials and
representatives from various
government
agencies,
was
conducted in preparation for the
re-establishment of the Pasig
River Ferry Service.
“Now, imagine a future
with the Pasig River as a central
corridor for transport, recreation
and
leisure,
environmental
protection,
climate
change
adaptation,
and
disaster
risk reduction and response
management in Metro Manila,”
Diokno said during inspection.
Diokno said the Pasig
River Ferry System is envisioned
to provide the commuters with
accessible, reliable, and pleasant
ferry service.
New stations along the
river are expected to open in the
cities of Manila, Mandaluyong,
Makati, Taguig, Pasig, and
Marikina in order to improve the
accessibility and connectivity of
the ferry service.
At present, the Pasig
River Ferry Service which is
being run by the MMDA has 12
stations, namely: Pinagbuhatan,
in Eusebio Avenue, Pasig City;
San Joaquin, on San Bernardo
Street; and Maybunga, on Dr.
Sixto Avenue, both also in
Pasig City. Makati City has two
stations - Guadalupe, on J.P.
Rizal Extension, and Valenzuela,
on A. Bonifacio Street. Hulo
Station is on Coronado Street in
Mandaluyong. Manila has six
stations - Lambingan, on Bautista
Street, Sta. Ana; Sta. Ana, on
Pedro Gil Street; Polytechnic
University of the Philippines
(PUP) Mabini Campus, Sta.
Mesa; Lawton; Escolta, on
Muelle dela Industria; and Plaza
Mexico, in Intramuros.
All of these ferry stations are
operational except for PUP Sta.
Mesa Ferry Station, scheduled
for repair, and Sta. Ana Ferry
Station, currently undergoing
repair.
For this year, four
additional stations are expected to
open. For 2019, additional eight
stations, and for 2021, additional
six stations are expected to be
operational. This program strives
to connect Metro Manila and
Laguna via Pasig River-Laguna
Lake.
“We find huge potential
in the Pasig River Ferry Service
as an alternative mode of
transportation for commuters...
it can also serve as a vehicle for
disaster response as a Ferry may
be one of the few ways we can
move people and goods during
and after major disaster,” Diokno
said.
Aside
from
being
functional, there are ongoing
projects like sidewalks and
linear parks built along the Pasig
River and its tributaries where
people can visit. The Pasig River
Rehabilitation
Commission
(PRRC) continuously constructs
linear parks along the Pasig River
and its tributaries as part of their
rehabilitation programs for the
River.
Meanwhile,
the
Technical Working Group for
the Pasig River Convergence
Program, focused on coordinating,
organizing, and streamlining
all government programs and
projects towards the rehabilitation
and utilization of the Pasig River,
is composed of the Department
of Transportation (DOTr) with

Diokno said during the
first TWG meeting last January
that the DBM will spearhead the
Pasig River Ferry Convergence
Program in order to harmonize
resources allocated in the 2018
budget for programs and projects
related to the development and
rehabilitation of Pasig River, and,
with the help of the TWG member
agencies, plan for the required
resources needed to improve the
ferry service moving into 2019.
Further, the revival of
the Pasig River Ferry Service
is expected to affect the Pasig
River system and its surrounding
communities, spurring economic
activity, renewing interest and
citizens’ sense of responsibility
towards
the
river,
and
transforming this historic place
into a multi-functional open
space network and a life-support
system for urban communities.
