The swinging of their whips left droplets of
blood on cars, houses and even bottles of soda
displayed on snack vendors’ tables that lined the
road.
“If one of my family members gets sick,
this is what we do,” said Norman Lapuot, 25, as
he flogged himself with a bamboo-tipped whip.
“I do this for my relatives.”

Lapuot, who said it was his fourth time
taking part in the ceremony, added that he
believed the ritual bloodletting had helped his
grandfather recover from a stroke.
While a majority of the Philippines’ 80
million Catholics spend Good Friday at church
or with family, participants undergo the ordeal to
atone for sins or to seek divine intervention.

Lawyer Ma. Carina Cunanan,
another PET ad hoc committee member,
said that the tribunal is expecting to
augment 101 security personnel this
coming week with more members of the
PNP.
She added that the parties will not
be allowed to bring in their security.
The PET said it still cannot
determine when the recount will be
finished.
The recount was initially scheduled
in February, was later reset to March 19,
and again moved to April 2.
Earlier, both camps agreed to
withdraw all the motions they had filed
before the PET to be able to proceed with
the recount.
Marcos filed the protest on June 29,
2016, claiming that the camp of Robredo
cheated in the automated polls in May
that year.
In his protest, Marcos contested the
results from 132,446 precincts in 39,221
clusters, covering 27 provinces and cities.
In his preliminary conference
briefing, Marcos also sought for a recount
in Camarines Sur, Iloilo and Negros
Oriental.
Robredo filed her answer in August
last year and also submitted a counter-
protest, questioning the results from more
than 30,000 polling precincts in several
provinces where Marcos won.
She also sought the dismissal of the
protest for lack of merit and jurisdiction
of the PET.
The high tribunal, in a ruling earlier
this year, junked Robredo’s plea and
proceeded with the case after finding the
protest sufficient in form and substance.
Robredo won the vice presidential
race in the May 2016 polls with 14,418,817
votes or 263,473 more than Marcos’
14,155,344 votes.

The gruesome sights left some of the
roughly 12,000 in attendance wide-eyed and
wincing with vicarious pain.
“The most terrifying was the feet part,
when the guy was screaming very loud,” said
28-year-old Juliette Pawinska, referring to when
the spikes were driven in during one crucifixion.
“I actually felt the pain that he felt,” added
the Polish national, who lives in the Philippines
and works as a computer programmer.
The mock crucifixions on Good Friday
have been going on for decades despite official
disapproval from the nation’s dominant Catholic
Church.
“The Church never encourages self-
flagellation, much less crucifixion,” Father Roy
Bellen, a spokesman for the archdiocese of
Manila, told AFP.

accountability for the non-regularization of
workers because of the nature of the workers’
employment as ‘subconts’ (short term for
workers employed by subcontractors). The
labor union leader condemned this, citing
that the Labor Code requires all employees
performing ‘necessary and desirable’ jobs
in the company to be considered ‘regular
employees’.
Jerome Adonis, secretary general
of national labor center Kilusang Mayo
Uno (KMU), said that aside from CCFPI’s
refusal to implement the DOLE order, the
company has also chosen to retrench at least
600 employees, claiming losses over the
recent implementation of the Tax Reform for
Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law. The
Train law imposes a P6/liter tax on beverages
using caloric and noncaloric sweeteners and
P12/liter on beverages using high fructose
corn syrup (HFCS).

Souvenir
Food stalls, cab drivers and even souvenir
stands get a boost from the event which draws
thousands of visitors every year.
Rose Anne Galang, whose full-time job
is as a factory worker, said she pulled in some
extra cash selling pork dumplings to hungry
tourists.
“It’s my first time, but business was really
good,” she added with a smile. “I’ll be back next
year.”
The people willing to have themselves
nailed to the cross will also likely turn up in
2019.
“Our beloved Jesus Christ has been our
inspiration, so every time there is a problem we
need to hurt ourselves,” said 57-year-old Ruben
Enaje, who has been crucified at the event for 32
consecutive years.

it is undergoing an organizational structure
assessment.
“In this case, ‘restructuring’ is simply
code for ‘union-busting’,” Adonis said, as four
union presidents and 19 other union leaders
were among those laid off.
KMU slammed the administration’s
“betrayal of workers and a connivance with
big businesses” after Duterte has recently
turned his back on his campaign promise to
end the contractualization and refused to sign
the executive order for the same. Despite the
release of an order in favor of Coca-Cola
workers, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello has
remained silent on the issue.
KMU and LIGA encouraged the public
to support the Coca-Cola workers on strike.
“The demand to regularize the 675
contractual Coke workers is a major front
in the Filipino workers’ struggle for regular
jobs, decent work and other fundamental labor
rights, including the right to unionize and to
strike,” Adonis said.
