BALITA Abril 04-10, 2018 Family Day for the Parents far away (2018) PGC Celebrates Of Family Day 2018 Rabbies... Batangas PIO: Edwin V. Zabarte Feature: Anilag reflects Laguna’s festive and diverse culture Joy Gabrido CALAMBA CITY, Laguna, (PIA) -- The Provincial Government of Laguna showcased its diverse and colorful culture, bringing together in one venue the different festivities of its municipalities and cities in the recently concluded 8-day Anilag Festival 2018 celebration from March 10 to 17. “Ito’y nagsimula noon bilang isang selebrasyon na agricultural festival… may sinunod na batas tungkol sa pag- commemorate ng araw ng mga magsasaka,” Laguna Tourism, Culture, Arts and Trade Office – History, Arts and Culture Division Chief Peter Jaynul Uckung recounted in an interview. The festival name, Anilag, that means “Ani ng Laguna” (Harvest of Laguna) is rooted from the fact that the province’s main source of livelihood is agriculture, where in its first years the day of the farmers whose sweat and blood were spent as they toiled in the fields was celebrated. Since the conduct of the jovial fete had been successful, it was adopted as the official festival of the province. Ating ipinagdiriwang ngayon sa agriculture, sa commerce iyong mga produkto ng bawat bayan,” he continued, saying that Anilag was named as the ‘Mother of All Festivals’ because it was expanded, whereas, all the festivals in Laguna was incorporated to it likewise showcasing the unique products of each town. During the term of former Governor ER Ejercito, it was renamed La Laguna Festival, which means “The Lake,” but was reverted to Anilag during the term of Governer Ramil Hernandez. Uckung also proudly shared that this festival became a Hall of Famer in the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) Awards among all Provincial Festivals in the country after it won the award in three consecutive years from 2011 until 2013. Years back, he added, it had already secured the same honor in two consecutive years technically making it the festival that had the most number of ATOP awards in the country. Events have expanded and diversified by conducting contests for the people from all walks of life. They also often join the Guinness World Records during the festivity like having the most number of grilled fish and most number of Espasol made, for instance. In the religious aspect, he added that it was also the first time in the Philippine history that the Aglipayans and Roman Catholics, that had been in conflict since the Spanish colonization, banded together in the Patron Parade in the opening and the closing of the celebration. “Simula na iyon ng pagtatahi sa napunit na diwa sa relihiyon ng mga Pilipino,” he said hoping that someday all other religions would join and unite with them as well. Anilag, as the division chief described, is the symbol of the identity of Laguna. “Ipinapakita ng lahat nang bayan dito ang kanilang produkto, kanilang kultura, iyong kanilang mga tourism sites, kanilang mga potentials for economic industry,” he expressed. The celebration has been made genuinely festive as it brought together all traditions, food, products, religion, and everything that Laguna could take pride from in one place – at the Laguna Provincial Capitol in Sta. Cruz, Laguna, which is the Capital of the Province. Governor Ramil Hernandez provided full support in this annual event as he alloted generous budget for the event and the Provincial Government even reached out to the Local Government Units (LGUs), especially to those that are financially incapable, by providing them capital to join the festival. The legacy of Anilag shall continue from one regime to another as they intend to preserve its original name as it is. It will, at the most, help preserve and pass on to the next generations the unique culture and history of the Province of Laguna.
