Georgia Lawyers for the Rule of Law: Protecting the Integrity of Our Legal System

On Saturday, March 8, 2025, a group of Atlanta lawyers met to talk about what appeared to be a systematic and troubling assault on the Rule of Law. We were concerned that judges were being threatened with impeachment because of rulings that were adverse to the position of the government and that lawyers and law firms were being retaliated against because they represented people disfavored by national leaders. These tactics were shocking and raised the specter that our system of laws and justice was being undermined. Atlanta lawyer Bill Ide, a past President of the American Bar Association and Co-Chair of the ABA Task Force for Democracy addressed the meeting, laying out similar concerns of his group and some of the actions they were taking to defend judges and lawyers and address the unprecedented situation.
After an afternoon of principled discussion, our group decided to start an initiative of Georgia lawyers whose purpose was to stand up for the Rule of Law here in Georgia. So was born, Georgia Lawyers for the Rule of Law( GLRL).
GLRL is now comprised of more than 310 Georgia lawyers, together with other supporters, who are committed to upholding the Rule of Law and the Constitution. We believe the system of checks and balances devised by our Founders has served our country well for over 235 years and should be vigorously defended. We believe that the Judiciary, as a separate and coequal branch of government, should be independent and nonpartisan. We believe that the judiciary’ s role is to interpret and apply our laws and 30 MAY / JUNE 2025
