The Legal Runaround Celebrates 25 Years of Running, Community and Giving Back
What began nearly three decades ago as a way to bring Atlanta’ s legal community together has reached an exciting milestone. The first Legal Runaround was held in June 1998, and this year, the Atlanta Bar Foundation proudly celebrated the 25th Annual Legal Runaround at Shirley Franklin Park.
This year, 293 runners came together for a morning of fitness, fun, community and giving back, raising more than $ 47,000 for the Atlanta Bar Foundation Police Scholarship Fund.
The Atlanta Police Department has been an important partner of the Legal Runaround throughout the years. Proceeds from the event have helped provide support to the families of Atlanta police officers killed in the line of duty, giving the race a purpose that extends far beyond the finish line.
This year’ s milestone celebration also welcomed Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and members of his team, who joined the festivities and helped present awards to participants. Their presence was a special addition to a morning that brought together Atlanta’ s legal, law enforcement and broader community.
The continued success of the Legal Runaround would not be possible without its sponsors. Their generosity helps bring the event to life each year while supporting the important mission behind it. The Atlanta Bar Foundation is grateful for their continued partnership and commitment to the community. Simply put, we could not do it without them. Over the years, the Legal Runaround has grown into more than a race. It gives members of Atlanta’ s legal community an opportunity to step away from the courtroom and office, connect with colleagues and families, and come together in support of a meaningful cause.
And They’ re Off!
Competition was strong at the front of the field. Timothy Scheuritzel, 26, captured first place overall with an impressive finish time of 20:10. Janeen Smith, 33, followed closely, finishing second overall in 20:36 and earning the distinction of being the first female finisher. Joshua Hicks, 37, rounded out the top three with a time of 20:44.
The remaining top 10 finishers were Graham Niess, 21:20; Evan Calatayud, 21:45; Jody Parkins, 21:50; Aliyah Perez, 21:55; Aja Nowlin, 21:57; Corey Sheehan, 21:57; and Arnold Dennis, 22:49. One of the morning’ s standout performances came from 13-year-old Graham Niess, who finished fourth overall with a time of 21:20.
