IN THE PROFESSION
understand that a misdemeanor in Georgia is typically viewed as an aggravated felony under immigration law, and that a DUI arrest( not only a conviction!) leads to the revocation of a visa.
President Trump issued ten executive orders and proclamations seeking to change the face of U. S. immigration law and policy. Specifically, immigration enforcement employer raids will lead to increased employer defense, both civilly and criminally. Revocation of federal funding to states and localities will affect public and private education, global programs, and law enforcement. Local law enforcement will be tasked in many cases with enforcing federal law without substantial education in the law or training. Existing treaties of friendship and commerce may
be challenged, which will not only lead to adverse actions against citizens of our allies but possibly trigger retaliation against U. S. citizens traveling and living abroad. Therefore, lawyers in all fields should engage in advocacy with federal and state lawmakers, supporting the fair and impartial implementation of federal immigration laws. We, the legal community, need to focus on the heart of the problem: Finding a way for U. S. businesses to legally employ foreign nationals who are needed to keep our local and national economies strong. We simply cannot afford to lose talent to other countries who do not construct barriers to legal immigration. We need the foreign workforce to stay competitive on the global stage – in Atlanta and in the entire nation. Are you looking for an opportunity to lead?
