What You Need to Know About the Proposed CLE Rules

A s part of our Annual Meeting in June , the State Bar of Georgia ’ s Board of Governors voted to make a recommendation for changes to the rules associated with Continuing Legal Education . The vote was the conclusion of work that began around June 2023 , with members of the Bar ’ s executive , finance , office of the general counsel , CLE , and ICLE departments , analyzing select changes to the CLE rules . Their work followed general discussions with Bar leadership , evaluation of similar changes in other jurisdictions , and a review of the recommendations of the Georgia Lawyer Competency Task Force Report .

Created in March 2021 by former Chief Justice Harold D . Melton , the Task Force was charged with evaluating the current requirements for admission to the practice of law in Georgia and exploring alternatives to the regulatory framework . The Task Force was also instructed to evaluate mechanisms and alternatives for ensuring the competency of experienced lawyers , including current Continuing Legal Education requirements .
