Year 11 Dance – Amber Irish, Beth Hogg, Beth Cowley, Devon Moore, Jessica Hull, Danielle McMahon, Abigail Timney, Jordan Greener.
For their final year at John Spence the Year 11 girls performed at the North Shields Dance Festival 2014. John Spence opened the show on Monday 3rd March with their performance which was inspired by the film “The Great Gatsby”.
Their inspiration was also boosted by the style and mix of dancing therefore they chose to choreograph a piece which included jazz, hip hop and elements of the Charleston to produce a fun and quirky performance.
As well as performing their own routine Beth Hogg, Amber Irish, Jessica Hull and Beth Cowley also attended sessions at Spring Gardens to choreograph the Year 6 “Stage and Screen” routine which Spring Gardens then performed on Tuesday evening. Overall the festival was a huge success from all involved and a pleasure to watch as a spectator.
The girls involved in the Dance Festival have driven dance at John Spence, choreographed routines for themselves and others in Key Stage 3 and throughout the 5 years have become fantastic leaders within school and within the primaries. They will most certainly be missed. We wish them every success in the future and look forward to seeing them on the stage and screen in not so distant future!
Over 16 Volleyball
On April 2nd the Year 11 Volleyball team travelled to Haydon Bridge to take part in the Northumberland over 16 tournament.
The team was: Carl Dietrich, Jamie Macleod, Ryan Syverson, David Office, Lewis McGoldrick, Connor Cummings and David Office.
The team started well and won the first two games having to battle from behind to secure the points. The team produced some great game play and deservedly went in to game 3 unbeaten. Game 3 produced a tight finish as the lads were undone at 14 all to lose by 2 points 16 -14, an unlucky end to the game but the team headed all guns blazing for the next match.
The 4th match was against Haydon Bridge High, the hosts and eventual winners; the team took their disappointment out on the opposition and got themselves into a strong position at 14-7. Haydon Bridge then produced a strong fight back and eventually won the game 16 -14 – again luck deserted the team at vital points.
The teams last game was a local derby versus Longbenton and the bad luck and a couple of 50/50 decisions went against the team meaning that Longbenton recorded a 15 -13 win.
The team were an absolute credit to the school and their poor luck was commented on by organiser Steve Betts who complimented the team on their play and sportsmanship.
