FIERCE LIONESS HER KINGDOM EXTENDS BEYOND A CLASSROOM!!
By Dumi Mbona
I have been teaching for 16 years since completing matric at the age of 15. I became a professional teacher at 21yrs of age. Before attending tertiary institution (Indumiso College of Education ) I was involved in many teaching activities in my community.
Teaching is my childhood passion; I use to conduct matric afternoon classes at my house for struggling matric learners. Immediately after passing my Teaching Diploma (PTD) I struggled to get a job. Due to my love for teaching, I volunteered in different schools up until I was hired as a permanent teacher in early 2000 at KwaCutshwayo Primary School (KZN), since then my love, enthusiasm and passion for teaching has flourished.
I was extremely creative, innovative and energetic as a young teacher. The former principal of my current school Mr KAM Ndhlovu was impressed and very appreciative in so much so that he gave me an opportunity to excel in my capabilities. One of those opportunities was conducting in-school workshops within first month of my recruitment. In these workshops I cascaded all the relevant information to my colleagues.
The uniqueness of my teaching stood out because I was the first teacher in my school who studied during Outcomes Based Education Curriculum (OBE ) implementation, while most of my colleagues attended workshops to enlighten themselves on the new curriculum changes. Teaching has always been my love. As a little girl I use to emulate my school teacher by teaching everyone near me; my mom, grandmother, aunts and uncles because I didn’t have siblings at the time, (joys of being the first born). I use to write with coals on walls as if I was a teacher standing in front a classroom. In grade 4 (Standard 2 at the time) I decided to ask my teacher to help her with below average learners during reading periods. All learners who were struggling came to me for assistance and walked away expects in some lessons which I helped make clear, from then a teacher was born.
I have studied and successfully completed Primary Teachers Diploma (PTD) at Indumiso College of Education, Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE) at UKZN , Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) at UNISA, BEd Hons at UKZN and Masters in Education at UKZN.
These qualifications are relevant and adding value to my teaching career. With all the skills and information I obtained during these studies they led me to greener pastures. Like the days when I was still a learner; I still extend my helping hand to other teachers who needed my assistance, and as time went on, and as time went on, teachers from different neighboring schools
