Connie ( Auger ) Boutet ‘ 48
The 1948 Tripod described Connie as an “ Avid sports fan … general math whiz … easy-going and good natured .” Postscripts caught up with Connie and learned more interesting facts about her and life at TA in the 40s .
• She is the youngest of four children in a family that emigrated from Canada – and the only child born in the U . S . Her siblings included Frances ’ 43 , Frank ’ 44 , and Arthur ’ 47 .
• Connie met and dated her late husband , Robert ’ 49 , while at Thornton . He was Captain of the football team . “ We had a group that hung out together and we kind-of paired off ,” she says . “ Some of us married .” The two were married for more than 70 years and had five children : Jon ’ 70 , Marc ’ 72 , Peter ’ 76 , Judy ( Tilley ) ’ 80 , and Mary ( McHugh ) ’ 81 .
• In the early 40s , many students left TA to join the 6 effort in World War II . “ The war was going on and a lot of the boys went into service ,” Connie recalls . “ My brother Frank was Canadian , so he had a hard time enlisting and finally got into the Navy . He was a radio man .”
• The Great Fires of 1947 swept through Maine , and hit areas of York County hard . To help the cause , Connie and other girls from TA would get together to make sandwiches for the fire fighters , while the boys would go doorto-door looking for brooms that could be soaked in water and used to help stomp out the fires .
• These days , Connie can be found volunteering in the Maine History Room at the Dyer Library every Friday morning . She helps people doing historical or genealogy research .
