1811 SOCIETY DAVID PENDLETON ' 81

During most of my 27- year career with the Portland Fire Department , beginning in 1985 , my connection with Thornton Academy was via Class of 1981 reunions , which I am happy to say have occurred every 5 years . I began to be more closely acquainted with TA in 2010 when my daughter , Valerie ‘ 14 , entered the freshman class . I had been affiliated with the Saco Fire Department as a volunteer or on-call firefighter since I was 15 years old , and was pretty much raised in the old Thornton Avenue station as my father , Kenneth ’ 52 , was working his way to become Chief of the Department .

I was fortunate to be able to retire from Portland in 2012 and return to my roots for a “ second career ” as a Deputy Fire Chief at Saco .
In my position , I oversee fire prevention and plans review for the Department , which has ultimately allowed me to connect to TA in a different way . I have worked with Thornton and the City on projects including new dorms , the Business Office , the now underway Facilities building , and the planned Field House .
I joined the Alumni Association 9 years ago , encouraged by friend and classmate Todd Davis ‘ 81 , who served the Association for many years . Earlier this year the Association elected me to President and together we are working to draw in new members . I have many great memories of my days at Thornton and becoming a member of the 1811 Society provides an additional opportunity for me , and my wife Brigitte ' 85 , to support the school and community .
The 1811 Society are individuals who pledge to remember TA in their estate planning . Members understand the important role philanthropy plays in securing the future of the school .
