What would you suggest to someone considering state office?
Go for it! Becoming a state officer is a life changing experience and I recommend that anyone interested take a look at the application. From traveling to Washington D.C. for the Washington Leadership Academy to meeting HOSA members across the globe, my experiences in HOSA have formed me into the person I am today and continue to allow me to grow. From better understanding the differences in leadership style, and more clearly defining things like empathy and compassion, my HOSA terms were an eye opening experience. Arizona HOSA wants to extend that opportunity to all of its members - why not you?
What was AzHOSA’s theme when you were a state officer and what did it mean to you?
For my first term the theme was Share Your Cellfie, and my second was Operation Leadership. Share Your Cellfie was meant to encourage members to identify, foster, and embrace their natural leadership strengths and weaknesses. We wanted to help members to step up and lead no matter their style. Operation Leadership helped to highlight the collaborative effort of medicine and how we need to work together not only as health professionals but as leaders to reach new heights.
Why did you run for office?
I originally ran for HOSA state office after seeing the amazing leaders who came before me. The 2014-2015 State Council impressed me so much with their professionalism, hard work, and leadership skills that all I could think was “I want to be like them.” So I went for it! After being elected for my first term I learned so much more about leadership, service, and even myself than I ever thought I would and that sparked my desire to keep serving Arizona HOSA.
What is your favorite HOSA memory?
My favorite HOSA memory is definitely traveling to the Washington Leadership Academy (WLA) with my fellow officers. It was the most enlightening experience I have ever had and allowed me to think about leadership in a new light. From touring the national monuments, to networking with other state officers, and even getting to meet our own congressional representatives, WLA was a chance to continue growing as a leader and to cement bonds that would last a lifetime.
What is something not many people know about you?
Many people may not know that I absolutely LOVE fruit. Any kind, anywhere, any time. Fruit is my main food group and I don’t expect that to change anytime soon.
