From the Editor-in-Chief
Viarnne Mischon
Over the last couple of years our junior broadcasters have been saying
how cool it would be to have their
own magazine. So when we first decided to design an online transmedia
magazine during the January holidays
this year, I had envisaged a small,
manageable bi-monthly publication
of around 30 pages that showcased
some of the excellent content created
by SBN’s young broadcasters. Now, by
issue 3, we have moved to a seasonal quarterly format of over 60 pages,
plus from this issue we are launching
SwitchOn Music Magazine as its own
supplementary publication... so much
for that initial idea! From issue 1 being a collection of articles and media
assembled predominately on power
point by our junior copy and video
editor Miani Rose and myself, with editorial also coming from 5 guest contributors, this 3rd issue of SwitchOn
Magazine has grown to a team of over
30, including graphic designers, editors and amazing writers and regular
contributors who are all contributing their time to create what is now
a massive undertaking. SBN is honoured to welcome many new regular
contributors and articles such as Big
Picture Science with Dr Seth Shostak,
senior astronomer at the SETI Institute
USA, Caring for Country with Dr Kishan Kariippanon from Arnhem Land,
Designing 2050 with Futurist Dr Peter
Ellyard, Seeds of the Forest with John
Seed OAM, Action! with Far Out Films
founder Fiona Warren and Teens Turning Green articles from Ashley Urgarte
in USA . We send a huge thank you to
all our contributors for your wonderful
input to SwitchOn!
SwitchOn Magazine is also providing a
great opportunity for young designers,
writers and editors to express their
creativity in what is the open eclectic
style of SwitchOn. If you would like to
contribute to our magazines in some
way, please email our team - we look
forward to hearing from you!

Comments & Feedback
Jackie French
2014/15 Australian Children’s
Laureate:
‘SwitchOn!’ showcases the
most amazing authors, with
a breadth and depth of topic
no other publication for young
people achieves. It is very,
very easy to underestimate
kids. SwitchOn never does –
it engages and interacts with
young people and inspires
them not just to reach for
the stars, but to ponder their
formation and our futures.
SwitchOn Magazine is the
most truly outstanding publication, and its profound positive
effect in ten, forty or fifty years
on the lives of our children is
impossible to calculate.
Kathryn Mann, Carey Baptist
Grammar School - Middle
School Coordinator:
SwitchOn! Magazine is a great
resource in the classroom
and being written ‘by kids for
kids’ means it’s written in ‘kid
friendly’ language and is easily accessible by students of
all ages. The movies, colourful format and topical articles
make it fun and engaging for
students and teachers alike.
Dr Peter Ellyard:
It is a pleasure and privilege
for me to write for this new
exciting SwitchOn! Magazine. Young people own
more of the future than we
oldies so I want to do my bit
to ensure that they become
the most resilient Future
Takers and purposeful Future Makers they can possibly be.

Well done on such a fantastic, interesting and informative magazine. We at Kids
Teaching Kids love it!!! I
think this is going to become
a must read for those interested in a more sustainable
future.
Kristina Stoney, Co-founder
World by Cycle:
It is important for youth to
have access to positive
news, role models, and
ideas to inspire positive directions for a sustainable
future. Sustainability can be
fun, energising, and popular; SwitchOn! magazine
demonstrates this and provides a much needed resource for our youth.
