A COMMITMENT TO VISITORS & HABITAT

By Anna Moir , Grants & Communications Manager and Peter Schlaht , Annual Giving Manager
ount Auburn Cemetery serves many

M communities , human and animal . In the final phase of our Indian Ridge Habitat Restoration , we improve our service to both .

Since 2019 , Mount Auburn ’ s horticulture team has been improving the historic Indian Ridge Path . Phases 1 and 2 of this initiative – completed in 2020 and 2021 – prioritized native plant biodiversity . We removed invasive species like Norway Maples from the Ridge and the slopes below it , replacing them with native shrubs and white-flowered Silverbell trees . This achieved a more cohesive aesthetic in the area while improving habitat resources for birds .
In 2022 , Mount Auburn undertakes the final phase of this project , linking the area to habitat restorations in other parts of the Cemetery ’ s historic quarter to form a larger Wildlife Corridor , create a colorful and diverse landscape on this popular path , and improve accessibility .
For Phase 3 , we engaged landscape designer Larry Weaner , a leading advocate of replacing turf grass with diverse , ecologically-friendly groundcover . The new design adds a sedge and wildflower meadow amid a series of landscape character zones . These distinct zones – North Ridge Entry , Longfellow Woods , Ridge Meadow , Gardner ’ s Woods , Auburn Glade , and South Ridge Entry – draw inspiration from the Ridge ’ s historic landscape , including some of its notable monuments .
Additionally , the asphalt path will be replaced . Asphalt produces harmful gases during production and installation and increases the “ heat island effect ” in urban areas . as part of our commitment to sustainability , Mount Auburn is we are replacing large segments of the path with stone aggregate . The new path will be wider , better accommodating the number of visitors who frequent this popular area for walking and birding .
We are excited to unveil this completed project to the Mount Auburn community . Keep an eye out for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony later in 2023 !
