SWCC Member Newsletter Fall 2013 | Page 2

From The Club President Dear Fellow Members, Nancy Nemec Club President Your Board of Directors were busy this summer working on strategies to ensure Shadow Wood CC remains at the top of the curve in the country club market. We have positioned ourselves well since turnover from the Bonita Bay Group. It has not been an easy journey, but going from developer owned to member owned has been the best thing that could have ever happened to Shadow Wood CC. Prior to our turnover date, we saw the housing market fall, the stock market plummet and retirement income drop down to next to nothing. I am happy to say, with all those factors against us, our membership came together, to form a new Shadow Wood CC, a solid, financially sound club where the members are proud to be a member, and we are “Shadow Wood Strong.” Membership levels are high, we have a new Clubhouse, which won “Clubhouse Renovation of the Year,” our relationship within the Brooks community is positive and we have a team of employees engaged and ready to serve. Your Board of Directors has met several times throughout this summer to discuss the club, the staff, the strategic plan and we refined a SWOT analysis. Most recently, we completed an extensive three day Retreat in August. One entire day was spent with Kurt Kuebler, of Kopplin and Kuebler, the firm we engaged for our General Manager search. We focused on studying board governance and best practices of highly performing clubs. As a board we reaffirmed our commitment to this direction and our desire to follow the club model where: Directors Direct, Managers Manage and Members Enjoy! With that emphasis, we have given our new General Manager, Brian Bartolec, a clear set of goals and objectives. We have given him the tools and the team to achieve those goals. In the past, the Board and Committees have been involved in daily operations, but with a strong management team in place, that is no longer necessary. Our Committee structure will shift a bit this year, with planning and oversight responsibilities remaining with the Committees, but operational responsibilities wholly on Brian and his team. In early fall, we will be holding an all Committee member orientation to go over the roles and responsibilities of our Committees and their members and explain their functions and goals. Committee meetings will be held throughout the year as needed, and the Committees will continue to provide guidance and remain an open conduit for information flow to and from the membership. We all look forward to another exceptional season at Shadow Wood as we near the fall and welcome home our seasonal members. We hope everyone continues to enjoy all the amenities we have to offer and we hope you continue to enjoy all of our clubhouse spaces, inside and out. It will be a great year for golf, tennis and social occasions! See you at the Club!
