The temple is called so as it faces the Bay of Bengal. This temple was built around 700 A.D, and it
was one of the oldest structural temples in India. Narasimhavarman II, the Pallava King, had built
this temple. Since 1984, it has been classified as the UNESCO World Heritage site. It is one of
the oldest rockcut stone shrines of South India.
