Unfortunately, human activity has a negative impact on the environment
and on the air and water quality. Andrei will tell us more about thiese
WEAKNESSES
1.Which are the main air pollutants?
The main air pollutants are: Sulphur dioxide, Nitrogen oxides, Carbon monoxide, Carbon dioxide, Particulate matter, Heavy metals, Ammonia, Methane. In 2012, Romania was at a level of fine particles at around 14.85 micrograms per cubic meter. This level is similar to the ones of the neighboring countries in the region.
2.Are there any highly pollutant factories in Romania?
Some polluting factories in our country are: Sometra and Azomures. Sometra is a metallurgical company in Copsa Mica near Sibiu. It polluted the air with sulphur dioxide, heavy metals and particulate matter but now it is working at a lower capacity. Azomures is a company that produces fertilizers and ammonia. The air pollution signs caused by these chemical factories can be seen both in the cities and in the area around them.
3.How about the means of transport?
In 2013, there were about 6 million cars registered in Romania, while the population was around 20 million. So, on average there was 1 car for every 3 persons. The increasing number of flights also has a negative impact.
4.What are the water pollutants?
The main water pollutants are: Sewage, farm runoff, industrial wastewater, litter, offshore oil.
5.Is the water quality good in Romania?
•70% of the water used in Romania is not purified and 40 cities in Romania discharge used water straight into rivers without purification. 5.6% of Romania’s waters are classified as “bad” and 3.1% as “very bad”.
•Unfortunately, the toxic wastes and heavy particles are polluting the national and international waters and therefore killing the aquatic fauna and flora.
•Only 11% of the rural population have sanitary sewage,7 million people in rural areas drinking water from wells; Romania in one of the states most affected by water shortage.
