SURGIA Newsletter: General Surgery Edition Volume II Issue 1 | Page 29
Day 2 of STAIRS kicked off with a very real-world focused
and visually stimulating presentation by Associate
Professor Martin Wullschleger, a General and Trauma
Surgeon from Logan Hospital. Then followed by ENT (Ear,
Nose and Throat) emergencies, presented by Dr Nicholas
Potter, consultant ENT, Head and Neck surgeon at Logan
Hospital and the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
Dr Potter also gave a live demonstration of how to perform
basic ENT procedures and passed equipment around for the
audience to see and feel. Dr Peter Wysocki then returned to
give another highly useful and interesting presentation on
haemorhagic shock. Dr Christian Schwindack, consultant
Neurosurgeon at GCUH and Pindara Private Hospital,
gave an interactive presentation on acute neurosurgical
emergencies with a thought-provoking Q&A session that
got students very involved. Dr Craig McBride and Dr Patel,
consultant paediatric surgeons at Lady Cilento Children’s
hospital, collaborated to give a stimulating presentation
with many noteworthy case studies in paediatric surgery.
“Students had the opportunity to
learn in a lecture style environment
from surgeons who are committed
to excellence in surgical education”
Our final presenter was Professor Harald Puhulla, General
surgeon at GCUH and Professor of Surgery at Griffith
University, who gave a very comprehensive overview of
colorectal emergencies and what is expected from a junior
doctor in the initial management.
STAIRS came to a close as Dr John North made a closing
address and prepared a quiz compiled of key points from
the speakers within the last 2 days. We’d like to thank
Griffith University, Dr Charles Nankivell, Dr John North,
Dr Marije Dalebout for all their help organising another
successful STAIRS event and look forward to working with
them again in the future. We hope students were inspired
and educated by the STAIRS 2015 program regardless of
where their future aspirations lie.
