Sushi , steaks , fine wines , craft beer , coffee , sweet treats and all the other delectables Cape Town is swiftly becoming world renowned for . That ’ s what you and 26 000 other Instagrammers will find in mouthwatering detail when you follow InstaEatsCapeTown , the account “ dedicated to all things Instadelicious in Cape Town .” It ’ s the creation of Capetonian foodie / photographer team Dean Horwitz and Francis Gersbach , who have the awful job of spending days and nights hunting down the juiciest food trends in the city , often photographed against equally tantalising , iconic attractions , like the beach , mountain and city lights . But don ’ t expect overly stylised shots that create unrealistic expectations . InstaEatsCapeTown is all about original content produced by going into restaurants and shooting the food as it ’ s served . “ It ’ s built around a focus on real food for real people in real restaurants ,” explains Gersbach . “ What that means is that we create a real connection with the food and the people who are viewing the photos , through the fact that with every photo we take we then eat the food afterwards – and we do not use any artificial products to make the food look different from what you would get if you went into the same restaurant .” That ’ s one thing that separates the account from the millions of other food blogs , he says . The other is that they let the visuals speak for themselves . No lengthy articles or blog reviews , just Instadelicious images . InstaEatsCapeTown has been going for two years now and has been so successful that there are plans to capture the flavour of other South African cities . Jo ’ burg and Durban , they ’ re coming for you .

Hinde was working as a crew member aboard a yacht bound for Réunion when it smashed into an atoll near the Maldivian capital of Malé . He and fellow deckhand Mark Scanlon awoke to find themselves shipwrecked in paradise , lost amongst a string of coral pearls that were fringed by waves on all sides . Their luggage and surfboards were still intact and so began the ultimate Robinson Crusoe adventure . Hinde returned the following year and he never left again . He married a local woman , became Tony Hussein Hinde after he converted to the country ’ s dominant religion , Islam , and continued to surf alone for years on end . But a secret like the Maldives was too good to keep , and by the end of the 1980s word had trickled out about the mythical double chain of 26 atolls scattered over 90 000 square kilometres of ocean between Africa and India . Hinde saw the writing on the wall . Instead of fighting the coming wave , he opened a resort and helped lay the blueprint for tourism in one of the world ’ s most dispersed countries . And so the Maldives ’ economy shifted away from the commodities of cowry shells , coir rope , fish and coco de mer ( the “ sea coconut ”) towards welcoming visitors from across the globe . Today tourism is the Maldives ’

largest industry , followed only by fishing , and the islands are a favourite honeymoon destination and are world renowned for their incredible diving , surfing and string of luxury resorts . The Maldives is no longer a secret by any means . Yet with its sparse population ( less than half a million people spread out across 1 192 coral islands ), the government ’ s strict policy of “ one island , one resort ” and stringent environmental protection regulations , it ’ s still easy to feel as if you ’ re shipwrecked in paradise .
