JANINE STEPHEN is deep into her second decade of writing stories for magazines and newspapers . She ’ s chatted to truckers about oil on Alaska ’ s Dalton Highway , chased politicians for comment as a parliamentary reporter and had a lot of fun writing travel stories about far-flung places , from Groot Marico to Mexico . Interviewees have included Kenyan camel herders , pop idol Will Young and a former president . And artists , of course . Thanks to a partner who paints marvelous lines himself , she ’ s used to nosing out contemporary art in new places . So the so-called “ Monster ”, Mexico City ( see page 26 ), was pure pleasure .
Q : Next best art travel destination you ’ ve been to ? It has to be Venice . Besides the riches by Italian Renaissance masters in museums like the Accademia ( never mind stumbling upon the odd Bellini or Titian in dim , echoing churches ), the Venice Biennale is an orgy of contemporary work from all over the world .
DAN SMITH is a graphic designer specialising in the art of information graphics ( page 22 ). His passion lies in the illustration of complex data and statistics in ways that make them both easy to understand and interesting to look at . Dan ’ s been working professionally for over 15 years , both in London and Cape Town .
Q : Worst travel faux pas you ’ ve made ? While hitch-hiking through Mozambique , I had jumped onto the back of a crowded truck and sat wherever I could find a space , careful not to squash any of the other folk around me . An old man sat glaring at me for a good hour before I asked him if I had done anything wrong , to which he replied that I was sitting on his goat !

SHAEN ADEY is a Gallo / Getty photographer living in Cape Town with the enviable life of a photojournalist , calling the fun she has shooting in the outdoors “ work ”. When she is not running extreme marathons ( see the Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race on page 34 ), hanging off crags or diving , she manages to fit in a bit of studio and book work .
Q : Which other extreme marathon would you rate as life-changing ? The Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon – a 250 kilometre self-sufficient run over seven days in the rugged , sun-scorched Kalahari desert . It was the first ultra run I ever did and a real life-changing experience for me . I came out feeling that if I can do that , I can do anything . Add it to your bucket list !
