THE HONEYMOON CRUISE
NEWLYWEDS REBEKAH FUNK AND HUSBAND JEAN-LUC AGREE ON A COMPROMISE HONEYMOON THAT ENDS UP BEING
THE LUXURY ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME.
“Let’s do something adventurous,” I
recall saying to my husband, Jean Luc, as
we sat in our favourite neighbourhood
coffee shop, planning our three-week
honeymoon. We had had some time
to catch our breath after the wedding,
sinking back into work, study and our new
routines as Mr and Mrs.
Adventure for me meant tropical

rainforests, remote islands, the odd bit of
culture shock and going off the grid. High
on my bucket list were destinations like
Cambodia, Colombia, Thailand or Brazil.
Jean Luc, meanwhile, grew up in a place
where uncertainty was the daily norm.
His childhood in the Democratic Republic
of Congo had taught him that places of
grand adventure were redolent of luxury,
where he could walk in the footsteps
of characters from history – emperors,
generals and kings. Europe, in other words.
I groaned inwardly and protested
outwardly; there was no way I was
going to Europe on honeymoon. How
could a continent so familiar (I’d lived
in Germany), with free Wi-Fi on trains
and busloads of tourists, offer us any
