Wait… In Love? With My Parents?!
“Out of all the theories that freud created, the Oedipus Complex is correct.”
My Grandmother and I had a conversation about the validity of the Oedipus Complex created by Sigmund Freud,an Australian neurologist who is known for his developing theories and his techniques of psychoanalysis. My grandmother, “Lita”, agrees with the Oedipus Complex while I, disagree. My response is:
I understand what you are trying to say but the Oedipus Complex is the theory that a child legitimately wishes to carry out relations with the parent of the opposite sex.
“Yes and what is the story of Oedipus?”
That a man named Oedipus married his mother and killed his father trying to escape a prophecy of marrying his mother and killing his father. However it was not intentional. He did not do it intentionally because he did not know that his parents were really his parents because he was adopted.
“Thats not the point. The point that Freud wanted to make was that children are subconsciously connected to their parent of opposite gender because that is the only person in their life at the time that gives them so much love and attention. And some people never grow out of that stage and the people who fight those emotions because they know it is morally wrong will treat that parent like crap when they grow older.”
Lita, Freud created a basis for psychological theories and he is well respected for that. However, all of his theories are outdated and I highly doubt that people actually fall in love with their parent. We love our parents but we do not fall in love with them.
“Its of the subconscious mind Nelli. no one actually realizes that it happens, it just does.”
I understand that our subconscious mind controls us more than our conscious mind, however, as we grow older, we train our mind to fit information that is best for survival..”
