Let ’ s touch briefly upon the leash debate , a hot topic in our community . As of now , our governing body ( British Canoeing ) recommendation is that on graded white water , we should be leash-free . This decision was made because of recently commissioned research on the matter .
As a WW SUP coach , I think it is crucial for everyone to understand where and when not to wear a leash on white water , but if you do choose to wear one , make sure it ’ s a releasable system which sits above the hips , separate to your buoyancy aid and is designed for the unpredictability of the white water environment . Continued research on leash usage is vital for our sport ’ s safety . Encouraging discussions around this topic only helps advance safety standards within our community .
Minimising risks and embracing education Preparing your board setup is crucial ; recent research has addressed potential hazards . Simple precautions , like avoiding backpacks with shoulder loops and using closed-gate carabiners , can significantly affect safety . Clean lines , clean technique , and minimising risks are protocols that contribute to a relaxing and enjoyable day on the water .
Some may question the need for such precautions on slow-grade waters , but remember , you ’ re on the move . Tree debris and other potential hazards on the river can pose real threats .
Surrounding yourself with a highly knowledgeable and supportive group is vital , especially if you ’ re new to the white water scene . If you haven ’ t got that knowledge , it is out there now . Unlike ten years ago , when the white water SUP scene was very new to the UK , with just a handful of paddlers experimenting on the water , British Canoeing now has white water safety and leadership courses offering the knowledge you need to enjoy your white water experience to the fullest .
Join the WW SUP community The evolution of WW SUP over the past decade has seen a surge in enthusiasts exploring moving waters and new scenery both here in the UK and abroad .
If you find yourself intrigued by the idea of tackling the rapids , the best thing you can do is get the knowledge , seek advice , consider further courses for personal development and safety , and join your local SUP community . You ’ re welcome to come to our annual White Water SUP Fest in North Wales this August 2-4th . A chance to meet like-minded SUPer ’ s from across the country , join workshops and more . See more details on our website .
This article isn ’ t educational ; it ’ s a celebration of the progress to date in WW SUP and top tips and pointers on preparing yourself for the river .
So , gear up , paddle out , and I ’ ll see you on the water !
