Mastering techniques for the rapids Stability on our board is paramount for a successful time on the river . The building blocks are understanding different foot positioning , ways to drive the board , and creating stability through the paddle strokes we use . Whitewater SUP is not just about balance ; it ’ s way more than that ; it ’ s about mastering the forces between you and the oncoming water . With the proper skill set , you can quickly navigate rapids with massive success .
Much of our success is achieved by gradually progressing from kneeling ( on both knees ) to a high kneel ( one knee ) to standing . We combine this with the correct techniques , paddling stances , and remembering to monitor our height ( up and down ) correctly as and when needed .
The equipment evolution Understanding the slight adjustments in the equipment we use can open up a whole new world of stunning rivers and endless opportunities for exploration . It all starts with the right gear . Tackling white water requires specialist equipment , unlike gliding on calm , flat water . Instead of using boards typically designed for touring , we often use a shorter , more agile board crafted specifically for white water paired with a robust and adjustable paddle .
I usually opt for a touring-style crossover board , the ideal rocker and shape for manoeuvrability and streamlined for speed , approximately 11 feet long and 30 inches wide . This stable design caters equally to the demands of moving water , up to grade 2 and allows me to travel distance too . But it ’ s not just about the board – safety is paramount .
Safety first : equipment and awareness
From making sure you use the correct fin size ( depending on the river level ), to the current and hotly debated discussion on whether to wear a leash !
When venturing onto white water , safety equipment takes centre stage .
Three essential pieces of WW equipment stand out : l Appropriately strong-soled footwear . l A white water-specific buoyancy aid designed and tested for the environment . l A helmet fit for purpose in the dynamic white water environment .
These aren ’ t just accessories ; they ’ re your lifeline on the river . In addition , ensuring your clothing matches the conditions , whether wearing a wetsuit or drysuit , is essential .
Choosing the right fin can make or break your day on the river . A poor choice could mean struggling through rapids , risking damage to your board , and even injury . Understanding your fin options from the get-go is crucial , and don ’ t hesitate to switch fins as needed throughout the day . The right fin can significantly enhance your experience , providing better forward momentum , improved turning ability , and overall stability on the board . So , take the time to choose wisely and ensure a smooth and enjoyable paddle every time .
