Foreword

A decade to remember

IN RECENT YEARS , OUR SPORT OF SUP HAS SURGED IN POPULARITY , CAPTIVATING ENTHUSIASTS OF ALL AGES AND SKILL LEVELS AND EVOLVING INTO A GLOBAL PHENOMENON , ATTRACTING MANY PADDLERS FROM OTHER WATERSPORTS . IN THIS SUPM COACHING SPECIAL , WE AIM TO INSPIRE A CULTURE THAT REVERES THE ART OF BALANCE , STRENGTH , AND MINDFULNESS , ILLUMINATING THE PATH TOWARD MASTERY IN THE DYNAMIC WORLD OF SUP .
Whether you are gliding gracefully across a tranquil lake , riding the waves of the open sea , navigating the currents of a meandering river or attempting to navigate white water , each paddle demands different skill sets . No matter where you are on your SUP journey , there is always room for growth , discovery , and a splash of fun .
You will find a wealth of knowledge from experienced coaches , athletes , and experts who have dedicated their lives to pursuing SUP excellence . From fundamental techniques to advanced manoeuvres , we delve into the intricacies of stand up paddleboarding , ensuring that whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro , you will hopefully find valuable insights and tips to elevate your skills and enrich your paddling experience .
Beyond the exhilarating and competitive nature of the sport , SUP can also be a holistic and fun pursuit , nourishing body and mind , and that ’ s why we ’ ve included articles featuring yoga and how to get your kids and dogs onto paddleboards . The rhythmic motion of SUP is a source of meditation , a moment of serenity in a world that can often be filled with chaos . It is a sport that invites you to be present and witness the beauty unfolding as you explore nature from a unique vantage point .
This coaching special is not just a manual ; it is a celebration of SUPM ’ s tenth birthday . Since April 2014 , we have aimed to foster a sense of community among stand up paddlers in the UK . That has resulted in over 4,000 pages of content from the very best in the sport , and we ’ re rightly proud of that achievement . It ’ s also a huge chance to thank all you paddlers who have purchased the magazine over the years . To the advertisers for contributing to the print and postage costs and the contributors and kit reviewers for their amazing input – it ’ s been a blast . Here ’ s to the endless horizons , the open waters , the boundless joy SUP brings into our lives and ten more years . Huge thanks from myself , Tez and Anne . Enjoy the ride ! Peter Tranter , February 2024 The first SUPM of 2024 will be out on April 4th .
