prohibited in the city.
Zimmerman said one
might argue that the light
industrial zone techni-
cally allows some leeway
for recreational uses, so
care was taken to make
clear that ranges were an
exception and would not
be allowed.
Councilmember Joanie
Clausen asked if that
would prohibit the police
department’s use of their
fi ring range. Zimmerman
said that the department
would need written per-
mission from the council,
and it was likely that sort
of document was already
on fi le.
No one came forward
to speak at the public
hearing for the ordinance.

Steve Schmidgall said he
was opposed to the re-
strictions.
“I believe dealing with
the gun issue in our soci-
ety is not the purview of
the Golden Valley City
Council, and I think what
we’re doing here is just
some ineffectual pander-
ing and preening on the
part of certain members
of the council, and I’m
not going to participate,”
he said.
Councilmember Gil-
lian Rosenquist said she
disagreed with Schmid-
gall, adding that similar
ordinances were in place,
like the one that regulates
sexually-oriented busi-
nesses.
“I would disagree that
it’s something abnormal,
it’s in line with the way
our city has been run and
is run,” she said, adding
she would rather have
something passed now
than as a reactionary ges-
ture in the future.
The council voted 5-1
in favor of the matter,
with Schmidgall dissent-
ing.
