1694 – Administration: Student Welfare and Counselling
SUMS was asked to “review the nature and scope of administrative activities within Student Health and
Welfare services and make recommendations for improvement.” The scope of the review focused on the
administration activity associated with service delivery and was limited to the Counselling Service and the
Disability Advice Service. Exploratory interviews were held with a number of professional and administrative
staff. We identified significant growth in demand across both services and explored the key risks and
constraints for each. The Counselling Service used a number of systems to supplement what is at heart, a
paper based administration process. Opportunities for the Counselling Service included a move to a more
holistic Case Management System (CMS), trialling electronic evaluation and more efficient data capture. For
the Disability Advice Service there were significant levels of uncertainty driven by changes to government
policy. Opportunities centred around standardisation of approach and improved information provision to
students, colleges and academic units. A Lean workshop was held with members of the Counselling Service to
challenge their current process and work towards a more efficient and effective process for implementation
in a new CMS.
1697 – Capital Projects
SUMS explored possible options that could give flexibility in the staff market and determine the advantages
and disadvantages that a Capital Projects shared service might bring and bring forward key issues for
implementation.
