At the Tomaquag Museum( tomaquagmuseum. org) in Exeter, you’ ll learn about the history and Indigenous culture of the land. Founded by anthropologist Eva Butler with the guidance of the late Princess Red Wing, it features a unique collection of cultural artifacts.
The Rhode Island State House( ristatehouse. org) in Providence features the world’ s fourth largest unsupported dome. This architectural wonder was designed by the renowned firm McKim, Mead & White and the structure holds offices for the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state and general treasurer, as well as legislative chambers. Tours of the building are provided by the Office of the Secretary of State( sos. gov. ri) and include a visit to the State Reception Room, the State Library and the Charter Museum that houses Rhode Island’ s 1663 Royal Charter and other historic objects.
Learn about Colonial life in America in the 1700s by visiting Warwick on June 13 and 14. See Colonial militia camped out in authentic Revolutionary-style regalia, watch the parade and see a reenactment of the event that started the American Revolution with the burning of the Gaspee ship( gaspee. com).
Rhode Island was home to many textile mills in its history and The Museum of Work & Culture in Woonsocket( rihs. org / locations / museum-of-work-culture) presents the story of the immigrants who travelled from Canada for better opportunities in Woonsocket at the turn of the last century. Guests explore the lives of these immigrants at home, work and school through nine immersive exhibits.
Touro Synagogue in Newport( touro synagogue. org) was dedicated in 1763, becoming America’ s first holy place of worship for people of the Jewish faith. While it still serves as an active congregation, more than 300,000 visitors tour the national historic site each year.
Later in Newport history, the city became the summer playground of wealthy industrialists during the Gilded Age of America. Families like the Astors and Vanderbilts erected magnificent estates along the edge of the ocean. Visit these opulent mansions during the Newport Flower Show( June 19-21) or purchase tickets for mansion tours any day during your stay. Wear comfortable shoes and following your tour, take a 3.5-mile stroll along the coastal edge of the properties to see a glimpse of both the buildings’ exteriors and breathtaking ocean views along the historic Cliff Walk.
Noteworthy stops highlighting contemporary culture here in Rhode Island include the Electromagnetic Pinball Museum in Pawtucket( electromagneticpinballmuseum. com) where you can play retro pinball machines for a token admission fee and the Newport Car Museum( newportcarmuseum. org), a private collection of 100 + automobiles that showcases eight decades of modern industrial automotive design.
