Innovation Camps ARCHITECTURE 101 Steward Middle School teacher Maria McCarthy was an architect who ran her own firm in Arizona for 16 years before moving to Virginia and becoming a teacher. Students will learn about proportion, scale, measurement, and craftsmanship to create and design a building that will fit in a selected site plan. They also will design spaces of buildings throughout the week. They will utilize creativity to recreate a familiar location, like their favorite restaurant or landmark and to imagine a dream house. Using professional-grade resources and recycled materials, campers will bring home the miniature architectural models they create during camp. Instructor: Maria McCarthy, Steward faculty Grades: 7 – 12 Date/Time: July 22 – 26, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Cost: $250 ARCHITECTURE 201 Instructor: Maria McCarthy, Steward faculty Grades: 7 – 12 Date/Time: July 29 – August 2; 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Cost: $250 CULINARY CAMP It’s never too early to learn to cook, and Chef Anton makes time in the kitchen so much fun. Join him to broaden your camper’s food horizons—from nutritional knowledge and various ways to use ingredients to techniques such as sautéing, braising, roasting, and cooking on the grill, this camp introduces students to new cuisine and reinvigorates favorite recipes. Each week of camp will feature a different menu, so campers will learn new recipes in both weeks. No doubt campers will enjoy showing off their new culinary skills at home! Instructor: Anton Gaston, Steward head chef Grades: 6 – 10 Date/Time: July 15 – 19, July 22 – 26; 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Cost: $385 To participate in this session, campers will need to have taken Architecture 101 summer camp either the week before or in previous summers. This camp will extend all the aspects of design and construction that were learned in Architecture 101. Campers will be building scaled models made from scaled wood materials, and they will design or replicate a building of their choice. The completed project will focus on accuracy, neatness, and aesthetics. Campers will take home a finished architectural model. Campers will need to bring the architectural scale, metal ruler, T-square and x-acto knife received in the previous camp. GRADES 6-8 | 29
