AROUND CAMPUS
Αρχω Projects
As a capstone experience , eighth graders delivered their Αρχω presentations . In Greek , Αρχω means “ to begin something from something , to lead .” As our eighth graders prepared to step out into the world beyond Saint David ’ s , they were tasked with applying what they have learned to generate something new . Boys were challenged to create artwork in the spirit of a famous modern or contemporary artist . They wrote a brief biography of the artist and a reflection on the process of creating their own work . The boys presented their completed piece and rationale to a panel of judges , including teachers and art professionals , who had to determine which project most successfully and meaningfully paid homage to the selected work , but did not merely imitate it .
The 2022 Αρχω project featured a variety of works from global modern artists . This year , Guggenheim Director Richard Armstrong was among the judges . Kiran K . was named the winner of the competition , for his homage to Dorothea Lange . Honorable mentions went to Ollie H ., homage to Ed Ruscha ; Jack M ., homage to Robert Long ; Danny M ., homage to Takashi Murakami ; and Nicolas S ., homage to Zhang Da Qian .
