AROUND CAMPUS

Collaborating to Study

In preparation for an upcoming assessment on Ancient Greece , fourth graders worked in pairs to create posters and shared their knowledge , thoughts , and questions .

The Immigrant Experience

When our third graders learned about immigration to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries , they considered the varying perspectives and experiences of the immigrants . What pushed or pulled them to leave their native lands ? What challenges did they face ? How did they feel ? Addressing these questions from the perspective of the immigrant helps build empathy and appreciation for differences . A highlight of this study , conducted in conjunction through our partnership with the New-York Historical Society , was a field trip to Ellis Island , which from 1892 to 1954 , processed nearly 12 million immigrants arriving at the Port of New York and New Jersey .

Mapping New York with the N-YHS

In partnership with the New-York Historical Society , first graders learned about the geography and landmarks of New York City and deepened their understanding of mapping . They created their own maps using techniques cartographers use .
