YOUNG LAWYER SHOWCASE

The Young Lawyers Section welcomed its new board of directors for the 2022-2023 term in June : Nick Surma ( president ), Bailey Voge ( secretary / treasurer ), Erica Hovey ( board of governors representative ), Zach Eiken ( American Bar Association representative ), and Matt Dearth ( American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division representative ).
The section continues to offer great networking and educational opportunities for North Dakota ’ s young lawyers through bimonthly happy hours and legal webinars . Upcoming events will be shared on the young lawyer email listserv and the SBAND events calendar .

SHELBY SCHIELDS
Shelby Schields is general counsel at Farm Credit Services of Mandan ( FCSM ). FCSM is a cooperative financial institution , owned by its customers , providing credit and financial management services to nearly 4,000 farmers , ranchers , and agribusinesses in the region .
Schields grew up on a cow-calf operation near Dodge and graduated from Beulah High School in 2010 . She went on to attend North Dakota State University where she graduated with degrees in zoology and psychology and a minor in chemistry in 2015 . Schields earned her juris doctor in 2018 from the University of North Dakota School of Law . She is licensed to practice law in North Dakota , Montana , and the District of Columbia .
After graduating , Schields was an associate attorney with Nyhus Law Firm in Bismarck . She then set her sights on Capitol Hill and moved to Washington , D . C ., with her fiancé , Ian . There , she worked in the United States Senate as a policy advisor on agriculture and natural resource issues , most recently for Sen . John Barrasso ( Wyo .). While she loved living and working in D . C ., they decided it was time to return to North Dakota . Before coming to FCSM , she was state policy counsel for U . S . Rep . Kelly Armstrong .
Schields currently resides in Mandan with Ian and Maggie , their golden retriever . She enjoys breakaway roping at rodeos , helping on the family ranch , and being a co-pilot to Ian ’ s aviation adventures .
MORGAN GLINES
Morgan Glines is an associate attorney at the Boppre Law Firm in Minot . She focuses her practice on estate planning , business law , and is the civil litigator for the firm . She is also the city attorney for the cities of Burlington and Newburg . She is licensed to practice in North Dakota , in both state and federal court , and has her tribal license to practice on the Ft . Berthold and Standing Rock reservations .
Glines is from Wahpeton . She attended the University of Mary , where she graduated cum laude in 2016 with a degree in criminal justice and Spanish . She then attended the University of North Dakota ( UND ) School of Law , where she obtained her juris doctor in 2019 . During law school , Glines participated in the UND School of Law external moot court competition in Buffalo , N . Y ., represented the students for the Student Bar Association , was vice president for Energy Law Association , and was a member of Phi Alpha Delta .
Glines states helping those in need and striving to have every person that comes into her office with a problem leave satisfied is what drives her in her practice . In her free time , she enjoys spending time outdoors with friends and family hunting , fishing , and going on walks with her significant other , Rheider McCormick , and their dog , Chey .
