Field Trip to the Greenway

The Tourism students from VTOS Dungarvan went on a field trip to the Greenway on Wednesday March 1st 2017. They travelled by bus to the car park by O’ Mahoney’s pub in Durrow, Stradbally.

They were met by Gavin Cummins (The Greenway Man) who brought them along the greenway first to the site of the old railway station and gave them some history about the station during the time of the first World War. The local children living along the line would go to bed after the last train passed through the station, this was the bedtime calling.

They then went through the tunnel under the bridge where there are stalagmites and stalactites along the sides. From here they went onto the railway bridge in Ballyvoile where they learned of the bridge being blown up during the Civil War, by a local man named Mansfield to stop the English soldiers.

Although the weather was inclement the group found the trip to be very interesting and worthwhile. A great afternoon was had by all and they would advise all to avail of both the History Trip with The Greenway Man, or a leisurely walk or cycle. It is clear to see how the Greenway has developed tourism and will continue to generate more tourism in the future.
