Staying on track—strategies for getting feedback and staying
focused during a workshop
Feedback is not only needed at the end but also at all stages of a workshop or training program to
ensure the success of the activity. Here are some strategies for giving feedback:
a. Do temperature checks “on
the fly”
Ask participants questions to know how they
are learning and fulfilling their needs.
Summarize answers and act on the feedback.
d. Monitor the learning climate
as you go
Pick up clues by paying attention to what is
there by seeing, hearing, and feeling what is
going on.
b. Talk with participants “one on
one” or in small groups during
breaks
Discussions at break times are sometimes
useful to understand group concerns and issues
and to share with others.
e. Use “quick hit” level-1
evaluation forms to generate
instant feedback
Have students provide comments for
adjustments using a level-1 evaluation form
(reaction).
c. Do “end of the day” verbal
feedback sessions with the
group
A “T” chart with questions about what could
have been done differently and what went
really well in the activity helps this purpose.
Begin with the least flattering information and
then the positive one. Record responses with
the participants’ own words.
One minute feedback: a short form to fill out
regarding participants’ perceptions of the
