More than 13,000 people were reached through
early actions on tropical storm Sara in Honduras
bout 13,000 people in
the municipalities of
Tocoa, Sonaguera and Sabá, were reached through early actions on tropical storm Sara. As pre-agreed thresholds were reached, the Honduran Red Cross activated (for the second time) its Early Action Plan on floods in November 14, according to forecasts issued by the National Center for Atmospheric, Oceanographic and Seismic Studies (CENAOS) and the National Hurricane Center (NOAA).
The impacts prioritized in
the Plan include the loss of livelihoods and household goods, lack of access to
food and safe water, and increased gastrointestinal illnesses. The early actions focused on the livelihoods and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion (WaSH) sectors. Among the highlights, the work carried out for the knowledge of flood risk, through the development of the Early Warning System (EWS) in the Aguán river basin, facilitated the activation. The collaborative efforts done
in coordination with local leaders, authorities as well as the Honduran Red Cross' branch in Tocoa, was essential for acting ahead of the floods' impacts.
