Anticipatory actions on human mobility will be addressed regionally in Central America and Mexico

uman mobility is a

multi-causal phenomenon, in which thousands of people undertake a complex journey characterized by high-risk situations. Such is the case of Central America and Mexico.

The region has become the route of greatest influx to reach the United States of America.

According to official data from the National Migration Institutes, during 2022, Panama registered nearly 248,000 migrants crossing the Darien plug.

Meanwhile, Honduras recorded 189,000 people transiting through official borders, and Mexico recorded close to 389,000 people entering through the southern border.

With the aim of promoting Anticipatory Action to provide humanitarian assistance and protection to migrants both in transit and returning, an regional event on anticipation of human mobility was held from May 10 to the 13th, 2023.

The initiative gathered in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, more than 40 representatives of the National Societies of the Red Cross in Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama and Mexico.

Risk management, migration, security and information management specialists from each country worked together in the creation of simplified Early Action Plans (EAP), in which potential activation mechanisms and anticipatory actions were identified according to the different contexts and complexities of human mobility related to transit and return.

The event was an exchange opportunity to promote humanitarian innovation and collaboration.
