It was a good start, but the ensuing years were filled with challenges. Chief among them has been establishing a steady income stream
and reducing the rate at which the investment capital was being spent (the burn rate). The burn rate has been reduced, but there is still
need for the company to be self-sustaining enough to fund the major improvements necessary.
Dwayne also faced another challenge that many entrepreneurs tend to hide. BookFusion’s advent came at roughly the same time as his
marriage to the love of his life. Therefore, balancing the unfamiliar world of entrepreneurship with the demands of a new marriage was a
challenge.
His advice to young couples in the same boat is to make clear, respectful communication the cornerstone of your marriage. Don’t be
afraid to respectfully tell your partner how you feel. His wife expressed that she felt that he was becoming too much of a workaholic
which was something that he hadn’t realized. He has since made adjustments to his life to strike a better work-life balance and create a
healthy relationship.
Dwayne’s has 3 useful tips for new entrepreneurs:
1. Don’t be afraid to apply for funding because it’s really hard if you
have to juggle your personal bills while managing the company. It’s
highly unlikely that an investor will want to steal your idea or take over
your company. The investor’s aim is to make a profit and the onus is on
you to prove that your idea and hard work will make that happen.
However, he also mentions that there’s nothing wrong with working
full-time while trying to build your business. It just makes things a bit
easier when you’re able to give more focus to making your business
work.
2. Celebrate the small victories. It helps with your psyche. Don’t wait

3. Ensure that you have people around who support and motivate you.
Get a mentor and and create a circle of people who will inspire you to
keep moving forward.
